Enhance SharePoint security with domain restriction : an essential feature

In a world where external collaboration is becoming unavoidable, data security remains an absolute priority. Microsoft SharePoint offers a powerful but often overlooked feature: restricting external sharing by domain.

How does it work ?

This option lets you control precisely which external domains your users can share content with.

For example, you can :

– Authorize only the domains of your trusted partners

– Block public domains such as gmail.com

– Limit sharing to specific domains at organization or site level.

Benefits for your organization

This feature offers several major benefits:

– Enhanced protection against data leakage

– Granular control of external access

– Simplified compliance with security policies

Impact on productivity

Unlike a total restriction on external sharing, this approach enables you to maintain effective collaboration with your trusted partners, while significantly reducing security risks.

Simple, efficient configuration

If you want to share SharePoint Site with external guest, then you should follow this steps :

  1. Access the SharePoint Administration Center
  2. Select “Sites” from left menu bar
  3. Select “Active Sites
  4. Select Site you want to share with external guests.
  5. Go to Settings
  6. Select “New and existing guests” as external file sharing option.
  7. Click “More sharing settings
  1. In external sharing section select “New and existing guests
  2. In “Advanced sharing settings”, activate “Limit sharing by domain”.
  3. Add your authorized or blocked domains.
  • Enter domain that be allowed to access this site from external guests.
  • Click “Save

Recommendation

For security-conscious organizations, enabling this feature should be a priority. It offers a perfect balance between collaboration and data protection.
